Tracks arrive for Old 100
ASHS Column for 1 4 07
Margaret Collier
‘Twas the week before Christmas when all over the place
City of Century workers set a fast pace.
By CSX tracks they loaded up rails
And all the stuff that track-laying entails.
Then down to the Historic Park they came
To unload and stack until they were quite lame.
Then came limb-lopping to make room for the old train
That soon will be here to thrill us again.
My apologies for the bad poetry, but 'tis the season and my brain is somewhat befuddled. We truly do want to recognize the Town of Century for the use of the equipment and manpower needed to prepare the bed for the return of #100. Our special thanks to the following men for their two days of hard work on this project: Larry Murphy, Carl Godwin, W. L. Tyree, Arver Moorer and Ketric Washington.
Don Sales, train committee member, was liaison with Roy Williams of CSX. Jerry Simmons and Margaret Collier recorded all of the procedures with video and still shots. After the whole project is completed we plan to have it properly documented, because so many people are working on many different levels to bring this to fruition that it will be important for the next generation to know what great things can be accomplished when everyone works together.
All was not work during that busy week. The Society held its Christmas meeting in The Leach House on Tuesday, December 19. Twenty-two members and guests enjoyed the most delectable goodies when each person brought his favorite from home. 'Tis true that our area cooks are the best! Of course, they wreck our waistlines, but we gladly make the sacrifice.
The Annual Meeting will be held in The Leach House, January 16,2007, so mark your calendars now lest you forget during the end of the year festivities. Kay Ross will be letting us know what to prepare for the evening meal. Stay tuned for her instructions.
Jefferson Ave. has long been a main thoroughfare of old Century. All manner of activities have taken place through the years. During the week before Christmas, a unique parade came along that took me a bit by surprise. After taking pictures and picking up candy I wondered who was responsible for this fine group of young people and adults who were so enthusiastically wishing everyone a "Merry Christmas." It turned out to be The S.A.V.E.D. Ministry using their first Christmas parade as a means of putting Christ back into Christmas. Those of us in my neighborhood truly enjoyed their "Tidings of joy!"
When you read this column the year 2007 will have begun. The Alger-Sullivan Historical Society has many plans and projects that will require a great deal of help from the area. If you have ideas, donations of any kind, or just want to learn more, do come to the meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 P.M. in The Leach House. If you are unable to attend meetings do keep up with us through The Tri-City Ledger or online. If all else fails, pick up that phone and call us. We need your support.
